Have You Changed What You Feed Your Pets?

by Danielle Chonody on November 26, 2008

Talk Back TuesdayRecalls of Chinese manufactured pet foods continue to regularly be in the news. Pet food have been found to be contaminated with melamin and it is now suspected that pet foods in Australia have caused over 12 cats to fall ill in the last week.

In the past year, because of concerns about imported foods and because I am concerned about the additives in store bought foods, I have changed my cat and dog foods over to a product manufactured in the US without preservatives and other chemical additives.

My question for you this week is -  Have you changed what you feed your pets because of the pet food scares in the past year?  What foods have you switched to?

I’ve changed to a locally manufactured dog food that is healthy and safe. It’s called Nutri Source and is made in Perham MN

I have two daschounds who eat almost anything.
Last month, both of my dogs started throwing up soon after they were eating Gravy Train pellets and Gravy Train canned beef.
I wasn’t worried, thoughtit might be something or small creature they ate out in the yard. Well next thing I know, my youngest dog began upchucking a lot. The Momma got sick also. So
I decided to change their food to rice and cooked eggs. And it stopped. Later in the week, I decided that I would feed them both from the dried pellets again.
The puppy began to act sick again. So took her to the vets and was told that it was her liver acting up. Gave her medications for that and I took her home. Well, the next day she seemed ok. Then after feeding her dinner, she went outside and then acted funny, couldn’t walk and looked very sad.
I just picked her up from the ground, took her inside, put her on the couch and then she gave a tremendous cry of pain and then stopped breathing. In seconds, in spite of mouth to mouth resussitation, she was dead!
When I called the doctor, he said it probably was her heart. WE buried her in our banana pathc that she loved.
I am not sure if it was the dog food, but she had taken all the medicine and seemed to be ok and I thought that her so liver problem was ok again.
What does anyone think? Maybe it was the dog food?

Nikki – that is a sad story. I’m very sorry for you loss.

I had a lab that was 3 years old that also suffered from a sudden death. Her pancreas starting producing too many enzymes, she stoppped eating and her liver swelled up. There was nothing they could do for her. I have also wondered if it was her food.

Have you changed the food that you are feeding your other dog?
